if looks could kill…(9:20am est wed jun 30 2004) then this may just do it. hqave to admist the price is steep for the top of the range model but what do you expect. i'd be interested to see how text renders on one of these. this 100ppi sounds cracking. if i had the money, if i only had the money… – by spacca |
uh(9:28am est wed jun 30 2004) “apparently the 30 inch lcd requires the 6800's massive processing power to run the display properly” from elseware on the net- i don't think it's the processing power it needs, it's the dual dvi ports – by chris |

minor correction(10:20am est wed jun 30 2004) “i don't think it's the processing power it needs, it's the dual dvi ports” it's the dual-link dvi port(s) that is needed. put simply: the creators of the dvi standard were pretty smart. turns out that mosy graphics cards/displays are single-link: they only use 12 of the 24 pins in the dvi connection, but the dual-link uses all 24 and therefore has twice the throughput. now what i'd like to see (for the 20″ & 23″ models) is a cable that splits my existing adc connection on my graphics card into dvi, usb and power so i can run the new lcd panel w/o a power brick. – by chm |
it's fantabulastic(10:31am est wed jun 30 2004) i wonder how long they last? 400:1 contrast. mmmmmm “30 inches (29.7 inches viewable)” i'm committed to the pc for music (cakewalk sonar) and job possibilities. i hope the 30 inch becomes available for non-macs within a year. man, that's nice. i'd better get a third job. – by kev, a swing dancer |
yeah(10:40am est wed jun 30 2004) i'll take that nice monitor for my pc, thanks. – by macs suck |
pc users…(10:45am est wed jun 30 2004) you can get the 23″ and the 20″ for the price of the 30″. so fear not. apple will happily sell you those pc compatible (and delicious) displays. btw… mac's rock … just look at tiger (or panther for that matter) |
not sure(10:46am est wed jun 30 2004) i am not so sure, maybe it's really just hype. tell ya what, they should send me one of these 30 inchers, along with a graphics card of course, for a long term evaluation. very long term. i'll let you all know how it goes. – by cd |

doom 3 would be awesome(11:25am est wed jun 30 2004) if apple did what alienware did and split the screen between two 6800 cards the effect would be awesome and frags would be too. – by old doom player |
doombah(11:50am est wed jun 30 2004) yeah, and if you can get someone to pay you to waste time playing doom, maybe you can afford one. bitter irony, ain't it? “this would be the ultimate gamer's monitor, but i crap away the day playing games, so i can't keep a job to afford the equipment i need to crap away the day… i need a government handout…” – by eyecallzem |
wow(11:56am est wed jun 30 2004) thats bigger than my t.v. – by mac's rule!!! |
:d(12:04pm est wed jun 30 2004) that is definitly bigger then your's or my tv also the resolution is a lot more too. now only if apple lower the price down to maybe under $1000 for the 20″ model that'll be nice. – by azn guy |
my question…..(2:12pm est wed jun 30 2004) the specs show 16ms response time. often reviews show 22ms displays beating 14ms displays, so i'm wondering if there are any reviews out that support it's 16ms response being honest. any reviews from a gamer's perspective? response time is everything for us gamers….. – by james beatty |
it does support image split on 2 monitors…(2:34pm est wed jun 30 2004) check out the quicktime stream of the keynote (on apple's site). the card is “dual-dual” and supports 2-30″ monitors with the image split across both. they even show it that way during the keynote. – by richs |
i see(2:42pm est wed jun 30 2004) that a review here: of a viewsonic vp2290b with an even higher res – 3,840 x 2,400 loking at the pic they are running two(2) dvi cables “…with 60-pin lfh-60 connectors at each end which support two dvi chnnels…” from a two head card to a single display. slow response time though 50ms, not sutable for gameing – by chris |
chris(4:53pm est wed jun 30 2004) 50ms?? £4,641.25!?!?! no thanks, i'll take the apple. |
yummy(9:31pm est wed jun 30 2004) i saw a picture in an australian newspaper with stevie standing infront of the 30″. i was sitting on the train at the time. i was so excited that i fainted…wet my pants and then had my wallet stolen. then i woke up on the wrong end of town. saw the picture again. fainted, wet my pants and had my shoes stolen. then i woke up in another state. saw the pic again….well…you know how it goes. by the time i made it home i was totally nekked and still excited. gimmy gimmy gimmy! – by tool |
so where is hdmi-ddl?(4:49am est thu jul 01 2004) hopefully hdmi starts to get into more and more products, just having few hdtvs, dvd-players and projectors is not enought. the size of the hdmi connector would enable to have those silly three or four dvi-d outputs to be on a single width card, why those are not being pushed?!? – by joe average |
two(8:12am est thu jul 01 2004) 50ms?? £4,641.25!?!?! no thanks, i'll take the apple at that price i'll take two. |
30″ for pc's(8:53am est thu jul 01 2004) i believe the only reason the 30″ display is 'only' for macs is that there are no dual-link graphics cards for pcs….yet – by g5envy |
price(9:10am est thu jul 01 2004) apple lists it for ~$3300 but notes it requires the separate ~$600 graphics adapter. – by jj brannon |
another macinturd product(3:12pm est thu jul 01 2004) you can get the sharp aquos 37″ lcd for $3,300. that has to be close to 50% more screen area for no more loot. i'd gladly trade for sharp's lower 1366 x 768 resolution – who the hell's going to run @ 2560 x 1600 anyway? – by julius |

moving right along…..(2:53pm est sun jul 04 2004) are there any rumors i can use the apple 30″ lcd on my pc in the coming months? i want it bad!!! – by james beatty |
if your dvi is dual link on pc, i see no reason why not(3:19am est mon jul 05 2004) yes, you can use the 30″ monitor on a pc assuming it's standard dual-link dvi. there are already pc-based dual-link dvi cards although you may need to use powerstrip from to coax your pc-based geforce 6800 to output at 2560×1600. no confirmations about this, but i would be happy to take this monitor for testing :d – by mark rejhon |
cautionary note.(3:27am est mon jul 05 2004) i should remind, that current pc-based 6800's are not ddl compatible yet, but they should be soon — once ddl compatible cards arrive on the pc, it's not a problem. it's not the monitor but the need for ddl compatible cards on the pc, and only a few are available. (most notably used for a different display — the ibm t221, for example) essentially, any graphics card that is capable of driving the ibm t221 can be reprogrammed, probably by a powerstrip tweak, to operate on the apple 30″ cinema display on a pc. – by mark rejhon |
hp display(1:02pm est mon jul 05 2004) is the hp 23″ (l2335 or so) the same oem display as the apple 23″? very close specs, size pixels, 16ms, etc. the hp adds component and video inputs, picture in picture display and/or speakers in the consumer version, while the apple display has the usb/firewire. anyone know? – by oem |
mark rejhon,(2:54pm est mon jul 05 2004) thanks for the tip. i hope very much nvidia gets on the ball and releases a 6800 ddl card for the pc soon. i'm probably getting the 30 screen because i'm a hardcore gamer/level designer and that huge screen with a huge resolution would be perfect for making my insanely gigantic rts game maps i'm famous for. my site: – by james beatty |
23in hd(8:18am est wed jul 07 2004) apples lcds are huge pieces of crap they do not refresh and leave gosting when you close a window. anyone want to stand up to that or hide behind 'use the other backgrounds not grey!!!!! also the color varis all over the place and all apple says is its with in our toporance !! and being a photographer its not even close to my tolorance .. the monitor or there arogance . so hows the new 30 inch turd doing on not leaving gosting and refreshing – by john |

30in on pc!?(2:06pm est thu jul 08 2004) check out this e-mail i got from nvidia tech support nvidia is a semiconductor company that provides 3d graphics processors to the computer industry's leading add-in card manufacturers and pc oems. we do not make or sell any card products. we provide apple with gpus and they design their own card for use in mac g5s. however, pny is the only card (ibm pc compatible) manufacturer that makes a card based on the quadrofx gpu that supports dual link dvi that would work. this is the requirement of the oem apple display. espically the part about: what do you guys think? would this work? anyone brave enough (read: rich enough) to try? – by dolphio |
interesting…..(5:52pm est thu jul 08 2004) i'll think about it. doesn't sound like a direct3d gaming card. i think that's their opengl workstation card. i'll look into it when i get home. john, i'll try one at an apple store, and see about the ghosting. i'll keep checking this thread even after it's archieved, it excites me greatly….. – by james beatty |
ddl(8:52pm est thu jul 08 2004) forgive my ignorance, but what is ddl? thanks … – by davege |
basically…(12:05pm est sat jul 10 2004) it's a way of combining two video outputs to create a single huge display, (like the apple 30″ display). you can still have two apple 30″ displays connected though, because the nvidia card is a “dual-dual”. – by thomas |
i bet 6800 ddl will become available for pc(3:45pm est sat jul 10 2004) hi, i bet that 6800 ddl will be available for the pc after the 30″ hits the market. there will be people clamoring for good quality 30″ displays, especially as it becomes known that a 6800 is more than powerful enough for 2560×1600 @ 60fps in videogames. as for ghosting, if it's rated at 16ms (which is vastly superior to ibm t225's slow 50ms), it shouldn't be too big of an issue since 98% of what i do on my monitor is development and web surfing. although some 16ms monitors are worse than 25ms monitors. what i do hope, is that the monitor meets its 16ms spec. however, i'd like to use it for some casual gaming from time to time (one or two videogames per year or so). i can really see ghosting on even the best 16ms monitors, but it is tolerable for casual gaming, but not for professional tournament gaming (where milliseconds count!). just hope that it's not one of the “worst 16ms monitors” ever released. the 2560×1600 resolution will really stand out in resolution, though. – by mark rejhon |
wait for hdmi(11:26pm est sat jul 10 2004) i like the dvi ports but at that price i will wait as long as needed for hdmi to take hold. – by louie |
res(6:55am est sun jul 11 2004) the resolution is equivalent to an array of 5 1024*768 lcd monitors. and to think i used to be happy with 640*480! it's also cheaper than the 20″ cinema display was when it first came out. now it is possible to turn the icons up to full size in osx and see more than 4 items in a window. – by bishop |
golly gee…..(4:57pm est sun jul 11 2004) the quadrofx 4000 cost about $1500. $3000 for the 30″ lcd is a serious stretch for me. anything over $600 for a graphics card to drive it breaks my spending max and then some. plus it's kinda lame for gaming, as it's an opengl workstation card mainly. john, apple's old lcd i think had a response time of 50ms. they used to list it on their website but it was so embarresing they pulled that statistic so nobody would see it and laugh. however, 16ms is far better even if they're bullshiting by a few ms like many lcd companies do. i'm still waiting to see one in an apple store though just to be sure. got my fingers crossed. – by james beatty |
question:(4:58pm est sun jul 11 2004) when the hell the 30″ being released? – by james beatty |
apple 30 inch to pc or not pc(8:06pm est sun jul 11 2004) according to a apple rep at comp usa, the new 30 inch lcd will not work on a pc, his reason is the dual 64 bit proscessing on the apple. no pc has a dual 64 pross. – by spu900p |
other dual-link cards(11:28pm est tue jul 13 2004) i'm waiting for replies from their tech support depts, but: inno3d claims their geforcefx cards support dual-link (see – it's a bit confusing gffx info in a geforce6 press release? whatever…) the msi geforce fx 5200 td128mb card is listed as having dual-link dvi. some company in hk called 'galaxy technology' has geforce4 mx cards that claim to support dual-link as well. i personally am thinking of the msi mostly because they're easy to get, not because msi makes a very respectable product these days. if i remember i'll get back to y'all with info on these cards (the msi is $100 cad, so that's pretty cheap on top of a $4700 or so display) – by phox |
on another note..(11:30pm est tue jul 13 2004) “according to a apple rep at comp usa, the new 30 inch lcd will not work on a pc, his reason is the dual 64 bit proscessing on the apple. no pc has a dual 64 pross.” could i pay you to go back to compusa and sterilize this guy? please? – by phox |

inno3d response(3:57pm est wed jul 14 2004) i'm not sure my question was understood, but: “it cannot apply fx series graphic card on geforce6800 series because of the different specification, our new web site may provide your needed information. please visit the maximum dvi output is at 1600 x 1200 resolution, we don't have graphic card higher than this.” hopefully msi gives me some sort of coherent answer, 'cause that's what i can get cheap locally anyways :o – by phox |
my bad…(7:12pm est wed jul 14 2004) sorry, should have been the msi pc5200-vt128 at not the fx5200-td128. still waiting to hear back from them. – by phox |
not a magic trick(8:56pm est tue aug 24 2004) it's not like apple has invented some new technology here. it's just a huge monitor. you could plug it into any dual-link dvi capable card (like the above mentioned pny) … however i haven't seen any card for the pc that will reach the 2560×1600 … they usually max out at 2048 × 1536. and of course, these monitors look blurry when you don't run in their native res. – by midget |
fans?(11:12am est sat aug 28 2004) amazon.com claims the 30″ apple display is supposed to be released this coming monday, 2004.08.24. does anyone know if the monitor contains one or more fans? i know that sony's 1920×1200 23″ p232 panel has at least one fan, which is noisy enough so that i would always turn my screen off when i wasn't going to be looking at it for a several minutes. i believe that apple's previous 1920×1200 23″ flat panel was fanless, but i'm not sure. both sony and apple have new 23″ 1920×1200 flat panel models i don't know if either of them have fans. i understand that the apple 30″ display needs to dissipate about 150 watts, but it should have a lot of surface area to do so, and apple has apparently gone to the expense of using an aluminum “enclosure” (not just the bezel), and steve jobs is known for his preference for fanless devices, so i think i have some basis to hope. by the way, i realize that apple's recommended video card contains a fan, but video card fans are usually disconnectable, and i'm hopeful that i can find a video card that will do dual link video and will survive with the fan disconnected when i'm not making much use of the computing power of the video subsystem (i always run my video cards with the fans disconnected rarely have problems, never when i use an aluminum case). |
30inch on pc(2:32pm est fri oct 08 2004) i called and talked to apple tech support and i asked if i could run this monitor on pc with my xfx dual dvi ddl 6800gt card and i quote….”i will give you two answers, one is the official apple answer and one is the real answer. the official answer is no apple stated that it will only run on a mac with this ddl card…the real answer is it will run perfectly fine on your 6800gt dual dvi ddl card.” so there you go from the horses mouth and the king of propaganda..apple tech support. – by jeremiah |
30 inch on pc(12:39pm est sun oct 31 2004) the xfx dual dvi ddl 6800gt is described by xfx as having dual single link dvi, not dual link dvi. the distinction crucial (if confusing), as only the latter will drive the 30″ cinema at hi rez. there are multiple forum reports of sucess with the quadro fx2000 or 3000, but as yet no others (none of the pc 6800s appear to be capable). would also be nice to know if ati supports this monitor with a pc version of the radeon x800, but so far it seems unclear whether either the card or the driver is available, and ati is notably mum. – by peter |
ddl(8:51am est sun nov 07 2004) this is a problem because dual single link could well mean that it does support the 30″ display. ie dual single link is refering to 2x dvi combined into a single link. there is no garantee which answer is correct. the ddl used by mac is simply a phrase that they came up with, there is no standard as to the expression of such a feature. – by adam |
ddl(9:04am est sun nov 07 2004) just looking at xfx's website i am pritty sure that the phrase dual single-ling dvi is the same thing as dual link dvi. i say this because only 6800 ultras support this featurethe gt do not. the gt says that it has dual dvi out puts, whilst the ultra has dual single-link dvi outputs. by the way i can say from experience (local mac shop has a 30″ dispaly) that it is the best lcd i have ever seen. they loaded up ut2003 and it ran it beautifully, no ghosting, great colour rendering (still not high end crt quality, but who cares 30″ damn). even better is that it runs resolutions other than its native resolution without a problem – by adam |
dual single link(1:33am est tue nov 09 2004) it's really confusing. dual single link means that there are two single link dvi outputs, each capable of a maximum resolution of 1600×1200 (or 1929×1200 with reduced refresh rate). single dual link means that there is one port that uses twice as many of its pins to drive twice the resolution, including one 30″ display at 2560×1600. dual dual link (the apple 6800u card) can drive two 30″ displays. i fear that none of the pc 6800's are actually dual link (the vendors put in only one tdms chip dual link needs two), but if someone finds out for sure (by suceeding on a 30″ display!), please post. the new ati firegl x3 256 has dual link dvi and is reported to run the 30″ monitor just fine. – by peter |
is apple's card pc compatible?(10:32pm est wed nov 10 2004) i was wondering if the apple verion of the geforce 6800 will run in a pc? doesn't apple use pc compatible agp slots? anybody making windoze/linux drivers? i can see a temporary boost of putting the best cad/graphics monitor on the market to be apple only. however, it would seem like apple will be loosing out by not embracing the pc market. my guess is that if they put the new monitor on the pc market, they will sell faster than the company can make them. think of all the executives that would need them to read e-mail. – by ck |
is apple's card pc compatible?(12:44pm est thu nov 11 2004) no, the agp slot may be compatible, but the apple card is gets its additional power from a non-standard adc motherboard slot beside the agp connector (24 volts, i think), rather than from a pc molex connector. as to the pc market, apple does describe the 30″ monitor as for pcs if you have a “pc with full-bandwidth dual-link dvi port and ddc support” (see above). i think apple made this display mainly for bragging rights and to sell g5s, not for volume sales. – by peter |
quadro fx 3000(agp) / 3400(pcie)(3:41pm est thu nov 11 2004) i'm convinced that these cards offer a working solution for pc's with the 30″ cinema. what i'd like to know is whether these cards will drive the panel to the full max resolution. we're in the process of procuring a test system. we've already received the monitor, the fx 3000 card should show up by the 15th, so i'll post our results when (not if…) we have it up & running. |
full resolution(4:48pm est thu nov 11 2004) as above, multiple reports on other forums of the fx series (2000+) driving the 30″ at full rez, so no fear, you should not be disapppointed. i'm waiting for a firegl x3 myself… meanwhile my 30″ display looks great at 1280×800 — from 6 feet away, that is! – by peter |
full resolution :-((5:52pm est sat nov 13 2004) i just bought one of thesese very expensive (€549) nvidia 6800 ultra cards which looks very similiar to the apple version. but still the display only works with 1280×800. the card has two dual link dvi connectors,….. any ideas ? where did you find the success stories ? – by mks |
6800u(10:37pm est sat nov 13 2004) mks, sorry to hear that, but as posted above, none of the pc 6800's are actually dual link… as you confirmed. they are actually dual single link, each connector being able to drive a 30” monitor at 1280×800. you can’t join the two outputs together to make a single dual link either (sorry). pc cards that truly are dual link include the quadro fx2000, 3000, 3400, 4000, 4400 and the ati firegl x3 and v7100. good forums to check include apple discussions . – by peter |
quadro fx 3000 works fine!(9:58am est tue nov 16 2004) i've been using the apple 30″ cinema display on a pc for a week now. the 2560×1600 resolution is great for cad/cam work. i'm using an nvidia quadro fx 3000 display adapter. i have also tested adding a second 23″ display running at 1920×1200 worked great! – by lew |
ati fire gl x3 – apple 30″(11:42am est thu nov 25 2004) it works perfect and the card is reasonably priced (839 €)!. full resolution (2560×1600) is possible and the timng seems to be correct. – by mks |
limited dvd resolution g5/new displays (8:00pm est sun nov 28 2004) i have always been astounded at the resolution of the dvd playback on my early model 22″ apple cinema display. animated films like dinosaur, monsters inc., and shrek 2 were a delight to watch. every bit of skin texture and hair movement was extremely sharp. i played these on a powerpc g4 cube, mac os x 10.3.5(and lower), and an aty,rage128pro video card. the screen resolution is 1600 x 1024. i recently purchased a dual 2.5g power mac g5 with the nvidia geforce 6800 ultra ddl graphics card. i have the computer wired to the new apple hd 23″ monitor and a new apple hd 30″ monitor. i must first say that the resolution of the icons and type is far superior to the older 22″, as is the screen brightness. my problem however is this: when i play the dvd's on the new system (23″ at 1920 x 1200 or 1600 x 1200)(30″ at 2560 x 1600 or 1600 x 1200 stretched) the sharpness is not as good as the older 22inch display on the g4 cube. i was told by a technician that maybe the extra resolution and resulting extra pixels on the new monitors was leading to a decreased dvd image quality (the image being spread over more pixels). this sounds logical, however to be sure i purchased a dviator and plugged the older 22″ display into the new g5 and sure enough the quality of dvd playback dropped, the hairs on textured skin in the pixar and disney films were no longer as crisp as they were when played from the g4 cube. there is a clear drop in dvd performance/resolution on the new machine setup irrespective of screens! it might suggest therefore that some reduction in resolution is occuring with the dvd/quicktime/geforce card combination versus the setup with the rage card in the g4. is this a software or hardware issue? can anyone shed light on this? |

x850(1:27am est wed dec 08 2004) mihael, the ati web site description reads a lot like other card descriptions hat have turned out not to actually support dual link. unfortunately, the technical writers often use dual single link (two dvi connectors) and dual link (one dvi connector with twice as many data channels) interchangeably – they are not the same at all, only the latter will support the high resolution needed by the 30″ display. the key factors in the ati tech specs are likely to be the stated limitation to 2048×1536 and the description of “integrated 165 mhz tmds transmitter”. to be dual link this should be transmitters (ending in s). – by peter |
pc/geforce6800/30inch(1:30pm est wed dec 08 2004) ladies and gentlemen, today marked the successful story of my 30″ apple lcd display with pc. as there are rumours floating around regarding the compatibility of this 30inch display with pc, i shall confirm to all of you that it's possible to have this setup with pc (not firegl or qfx). the turning point to this is the graphics card that i'm currently using. this is the asus v9999 gamer edition geforce 6800 (not even ultra). i can have optimal resolution of 2560×1600 32bits runs on windows xp sp2. tested it with 3dmark03/05, doom 3, farcry, ut04, sims 2….etc. this is absolutely amazing and unbelievable!!! |
dual link on v9999 geforce 6800?(1:07am est thu dec 09 2004) if not unbelievable at least surprising, as asus specifications list this card as having maximum resolution of 2048×1536. it would be interesting if this was the only 6800 built with two tmds chips… not sure why they would have done this (there was not a known market at the time)… – by peter |
30inch with non-dual link(5:56am est thu dec 09 2004) please refer to my apple forum at: – by rick |
this is what you need :(12:54pm est mon dec 13 2004) fact : you need dual link to provide the bandwidth necessary to drive resolutions over 1920×1200. for pc, currently only “professional” cards like quadros have dual link. the 3400 has one dual link and one single link, the 4400 has two dual link, so the 4400 is in theory capable of running two 30″ monitors. i have a quadro 3400 and apple display and spent a *lot* of time investigating this. if it could be done cheaper i would have done. it may be that you can tweak a 6800 to run the higher resolutions by sacrificing refresh..not sure..there are claims by some that they've had 6800's working…but so far the only screenshots or hard proof has come from quadro owners like myself… – by lee |
30″ apple on pc(11:11pm est mon dec 13 2004) i want to believe the the success of the 6800 series working for rick. i have not had the same luck. i have almost the identical setup as he has with these facts: pny 6800 gt 256mb dvi/vga does not work. xfx 6800 gt 256mb w/dual dvi does not work. pny fx4000 256mb w/dual dvi works perfect. the fx card clocked at 435/1.11 for optimal clock setting with detonator 66.93. tested game resolutions are half life 2 @ 2560 x 1600 – smooth as glass, everything maxed. far cry @ 2560 x 1600 – slow but playable ( need to lower res and settings) ut2004 @ 1600 x 900 – smooth as glass on dsl. pacific assault @ 1600 x 900 – smooth. tribes vengeance @ 1600 x 1200 awesome on dsl. ea games (bat viet, call of duty) post at a max of 1024 x 768 ? lots of tweeking to do but many games are very playable. fx4000 card is very fast but expensive. lcd is huge ! wallpapers look fabulous. runs on pc perfect. plays games as well as my pny 6800 gt clocked past ultra. a friend has found an asus v9999 ultra ddl he is picking up…we will see if this asus fantasy is real or if rick has the only card that will work with this display. if his gamer editions card worked than an ultra made from the same vendor should work. if it doesn't, we all as a group should demand rick to give us pictures as proof. i need some sleep rick…talk to me – by tired of this link |
30inch display geforce 6800(7:02am est tue dec 14 2004) i feel sorry to hear all the unsuccessful stories of you guys. nevertheless, i'm going to prove it to all of you that in fact this 30inch display is working fine with several non-dual link cards. i will test it with a geforce 6800ultra tomorrow as i believe it should work provided that it's one of those geforce 6800 standard. i will put up all the screen shots and pitures in full details on 15 dec 04. you should come back and check the link tomorrow. until then, i understand your frustration and confusion. – by rick |
30″ on pc with 6800 gto(1:27pm est tue dec 14 2004) wanted to add in a few commments here. i followed the entire chain for the past few weeks prior to making a decision on buying the monitor and card. i ordered a quadro 3000 online and went to purchase a monitor at compusa — made sure i got one with zero dead pixels off the floor. the store was running the card off a mac without the ultra card — it was working (a much lower resolution) but it was working. i decided to plug it into a new dell box that i got with a 256mb nvidia geforce 6800 gto graphics card — knowing the issue around dual link?? not only did it work, but it's driving the monitor at resolutions in the high 2k range (didn't write it down) but it's up there – also driving a 21inch dell at the same time — the resolution and quality is more than high enough for the monitor…… this one really confuses me — unless the o part of the gto is a new dual link??? – by crybaby |
asus v9999(2:56pm est tue dec 14 2004) i went out today and bought this card ( asus v9999 ge )to see if rick was right. and i´m glad i did!! i dont´t understand this at all it is actually working in full resolution! i don´t know how but it works, strange very strange. it would be interesting if someone could figure out how this can be possible. – by christoffer |
asus v9999 (6:36pm est tue dec 14 2004) this is great news! i can not understand the 'why' behind the v9999 producing full res but i'll be looking out for one of these cards (currently they seem hard to come by here in vancouver). i would like to knwo what the refresh rate people are getting with these cards set at the 2560 res….please let us know if i do find a v9999 i'll immediately post my results. my rig is similiar to ricks (same mobo/processor) so i'm hopeful. i realy want this monitor for gaming! – by dogwelder |
asus v9999 ultra w/dual dvi(9:29pm est tue dec 14 2004) this is making me ill. this card will not go over 1280 x 800. i tried boxed drivers as well as the detonator, no luck. i would really like to get this card woking..it is awesome…but useless at this res on the 30″. if i don't get it working somehow by tonight i will have to return it…and a very rare card in this area…it's killing me. i can't believe i will be trading this card in for the gamers edition card. but if you guys are confirming it works..than i don't see much of a choice. keep postin – by tired of this link |
asus9999 geforce 6800 ultra(12:01am est wed dec 15 2004) hello everyone, i'm going out for exams very soon. when i get back tonite (hong kong time 9pm), i'll put up everything including screenshots and result on the web. you will see results for asus9999 6800 gamer edition and asus9999 6800 ultra. until then, wish me best of luck in exams! – by rick |
screenshots 30inch + geforce 6800(11:15am est wed dec 15 2004) as i have promised to all of you, here you go: don't worry about those chinese words which could make no sense to you. just focus on the photos. all comments are welcome. – by rick |
thanks(11:11pm est wed dec 15 2004) rick, thanks for the post. i went out and bought my 30″ today, which i am running at half resolution right now. the v9999 ge is coming next day air tomorrow. hope i have as much success as you. this monitor is absolutely incredible, even at 1280×800. – by doug |
v9999 on 30″: what's up?(2:02am est thu dec 16 2004) i'd be as delighted as the next person if the v9999 works ay full resolution on the 30″ display, but there are some basic principals that have to be worked with: 1) if the card is single link and conforms to the dvi standard (165 mhx tdms) the fastest refresh that can be achieved at 2560×1600 (if there is essentially no blanking interval) is about 40hz. so, let's hear from v9999 owners – what is your refresh rate at 2560×1600? what is the number on your sii chip (assuming only one chip, i.e single link)? if apple (unintentionally?) provided support for 55 hz or lower refresh rates at full rez on single link, that is a real bonus. i've tried the 30″ monitor with lower (40hz) refresh rates off 165 mhz single link cards and no go. – by peter |
thank you peter(10:44am est thu dec 16 2004) i have had the 30″ for 2 weeks now…the best card for running on the pc seems to be quadro fx4000. i have tried the following cards with no luck past 1280 x 800. pny 6800gt 256 dvi/vga, xfx 6800gt 256 dvi/dvi, asus v9999 ultra 256 dvi/dvi. – by dave |
asus v9999(11:09am est thu dec 16 2004) yeah well as can you see above v9999 gamer edition is working fine. and it´s working in 60 hz. check out ricks link. so no quadro fx4000 is not “best card”. it´s a huge price diffrance between those two cards! – by christoffer |
asus v9999(2:27pm est fri dec 17 2004) yes the $ is a big differance, but much better performance with this card. the obvious being cad apps, but also the card carries the same specs as the 6800 ultra. in fact when i optimized all the settings on the card, it runs at ultra extreme speeds. the v9999 ge is much better on price…but i still haven't heard any word on what game resolutions this card is getting with the 30″ apple. thats great if it runs with the 2560×1600@32, but the card is not strong enough to run games fluid at this res. playing the games at low res just to make it playable is not impressive on this 3k – 30″ lcd. might as well hook up to a tv. the fx4000 runs halflife 2 @ 2560x 1600@32 perfect and everthing maxed. same with far cry – settings at medium. any future games based on these engines will run great with this monitor. ut2004 offers a max of 1600 x 1200 – which plays perfect. all the ea games don't want to post anything higher than 1024 x 768 ? including doom3…is there some setting that i could change so that when the game loads it can support more resolutions? anybody else out there have good luck with this asus v9999 ge? load some games and give feedback on what res you can play at……. – by dave |
confusion reigns :)(3:55am est sat dec 18 2004) clearly rick (and others) are not making this up, there are some who have been able to get this working on a single-link card. they are in a minority though, there are a larger number of people who have “chanced it” and bought 6800's only to end up with an expensive mistake. so – clearly there is something different in some cards. but what ? as an added complication, i have found that i can run the 2560×1600 from either dvi port…now since the 3400 only has one dual-link and the other is single-link this is clearly “wrong”. i've been in contact with pny to ask how this is possible, their response : “that's right, to my knowledge the dual link dvi is on the first ouput only, the single link dvi is on both outputs. the conclusion i am drawing is that some cards must be using an external or higher-spec tmds transmitter which combined with blanking achieves the resolution. the sil164 quotes 25 to 165 mhz whereas the si1172 says 25 to 225 mhz but 225 mhz is 2048×1536 ??? from a silicon image whitepaper : “in theory, single- and dual-link support have a clear dividing line. single-link dvi supports resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 (165 mhz), and dual link can support much higher resolutions (330 mhz and greater). but in reality, single link can support up to 3840 x 2400” |
and more…(4:11am est sat dec 18 2004) “there are two reasons why single link can support resolutions higher then 1600 x 1200. first, by using reduced blanking, lcd monitors can recapture much of the wasted pixel clock time used during the blanking period. since there is no crt gun required for repositioning, this valuable time can now be used to light up pixels without needing to implement a dual-link strategy. reducing the refresh rate (hz) is another method used to support higher resolutions like 3840 x 2400.” i have a pdf which shows that 1920×1200 can be achieved on 165mhz with blanking and upto 3840×2400 with reduced hz. so there you have it. it looks definite now that a combination of a good tmds, blanking and reduced hz will result in the res you want. the above combination will probably only be found on a high-end card such as the v9999 gamer which explains all. one thing is for sure though, running single-link at 2560×1200 is a compromise !! dual-link owners can get full res without compromise which probably means higher “quality”. since rick has not complained about image quality, the question then is justifying an expensive quadro/firegl card….. my conclusion…if you want to be rock-solid certain, go for a dual-link card. if you have the option of a try-and-see, then go for a high end 6800 series and cross your fingers :) – by lee |
refresh rate…(4:49am est sat dec 18 2004) lee: my refresh rate is 60 hz with v9999 ge in full resolution. and as i understood it right it is “normal”. so it´s not redused. if that is what you meant by redused refresh rate. as for the image quality i can guarantee you that there in no quality loss what so ever! images on the screen looks as good or even better than my old acd 23″. – by christoffer |
indeedy(6:21am est sat dec 18 2004) if your card is single-link and the refresh is 60hz then as far as i can see the only possible way to achieve that resolution means your card must have a higher bandwidth tmds and is blanking. or perhaps yours is dual link. i think we might be onto something here. here's a post nicked from a different forum : “the consumer 6800u *samples* had duallink dvi: the second chip above the screw is present !!!!! so…does this mean that asus have unofficially included the second tmds ?? (if anyone with an ounce of electronics wisdom is reading, perhaps pointing out the tmds chips to me would be a good idea because so far this is just conspiracy theory) :) |
er….(6:41am est sat dec 18 2004) checking the above pictures again, on the first to the right of the pci-e connector, just right of the screwhead is a silicon image chip. at least, it looks like this : that chip is missing on the other two boards, however on the v9999 there is *something* there – not a square si chip but certainly something. i think i'm going to give up now before i go blind looking at the reverse of gfx cards :) suffice to say the v9999ge looks “special”. my advice still stands – buy a quadro/firegl to be certain, or run a risk and try and find a special v9999ge. |

question:(6:33pm est mon dec 27 2004) can somebody with a v9999 gamers edition card check something out for me? you'll need bright light, and maybe a flashlight and magnifying glass. single link connectors should have only half the pins in the dvi connector in use, and duel link should have all of them in use. i'm thinking maybe you'd see little copper connectors in half the dvi pin holes with single link, and copper connectors in all the dvi pin holes with duel link. can somebody check this out? it may allow us to see if asus secretly slipped some duel link into this card that they're keeping a secret because maybe they're not sure it's quite 100% solid yet? or maybe they had some leftovers from preparing to make too many high end workstation cards? – by james beatty |
re: question(4:45pm est tue dec 28 2004) i'm not sure that that would help… the dvi connector my ati all-in-wonder 9800 pro has the copper connectors in all the holes. also, not exactly about the apple cinema 30″ monitor, but pertaining to the discussion of what it takes to drive such high resolutions, check this out if you like: i don't understand how it says that a radeon 8500 can drive that monitor at 3840 x 2400. how does that make sense? – by lancelot |

realizm 200 game performance(7:41am est mon jan 03 2005) i am very disappointed about game performance — very bad. my previous card — ati aiw 9700 was several times faster playing games. 3dlabs maintains they do not design their card for gamers, only for professionals. i am considering replacing the computer with a computer with an asus sli motherboard and nvidia quadro fx 3400 sli pci express graphics card. 3dlabs next driver has to greatly improve game performance for me to change my mind (but i doubt it will). – by kevin |
ati cards look good to me(5:56pm est mon jan 03 2005) dual-link cards for pc… ati firegl x3-256 (256mb, agp, x800 pro chip) @ £489 ati firegl v7100 (256mb, pci-e, x800 xt chip) @ £534 pny nvidia quadro fx3000 (256mb, agp, 5900 ultra chip) @ £680 pny nvidia quadro fx3400 (256mb, pci-e, 6800 gt sli chip) @ £690 pny nvidia quadro fx4000 (256mb, agp, 6800 ultra chip) @ £1198 pny nvidia quadro fx4400 (512mb, pci-e, 6800 ultra sli chip) @ £1277 asus v9999ge geforce 6800 (256mb, agp, 6800 chip) @ £219 [probably not dual-link but si1172, i.e. fast tmds transmitters chip] note: prices in pound sterling and exclude vat. trouble is agp cards are freely available, whereas pci-e (pcie) cards are impossible to find. gaming performance should reflect the chipsets that these cards are originated from. i.e. ati cards are probably the winners, and cheap too. however, have read of some gaming incompatibilities with ati, but some people solved by installing catalyst drivers rather than firegl ones. anyone got these screens working with ati cards? – by stoomonster |
tmds transmitter(8:07pm est mon jan 03 2005) are dual link tmds transmitter chips expensive? if not, then why don't pc video card makers just add them? – by zen |
silicon image tmds transmitter…(8:31am est tue jan 04 2005) …are not expensive, and probably in the low tens of dollars each in volume. card makers do not add them because they are not in the standard designs for graphics boards from nvidia/ati. nvidia had them in original 6800 ultra reference boards, but removed them at the last minute. why? because they need a differenciator for their workstation cards versus their desktop cards. physically the only difference between theses two classes of card is the additional tmds transmitter, however, the workstation cards cost customers 2-3 times as much and generate much greater margins for nvidia/ati. if desktop cards had additional tmds transmitters, they would cannibalise the workstation market and it's huge margins. |
external tmds transmitter(8:12pm est tue jan 04 2005) what are “external” tmds transmitters that i sometimes hear about? are they some sort of device that one can attach to the output of video cards for connection to displays? or is there such a device? – by zen |
what are external tmds transmitter?(6:04am est wed jan 05 2005) many graphics controllers have inbuilt tmds transmitters, i.e. inside the actual gpu chip itself. tomshardware did an excellent analysis of tmds transmitters in ati and nvidia cards that you can find here: some manufacturers (e.g. msi) don't think the internal tmds transmitters are good enough and use external ones like silicon image sil164 instead. |
bad pixels, fans, other noise sources(12:04am est mon jan 10 2005) i was wondering if anybody out there has ever seen an apple 30 inch cinema hd display with even a single bad subpixel. i would also like to know if the display has any fans or other moving parts. finally, does the display make any other noise, such as a squeak from the back light or power supply? – by anonymous |
v9999 ge's extra chip on back(2:30am est mon jan 10 2005) from the xbit labs review: “at the back side of the pcb, the geforce 6800 ultra has a tmds transmitter from silicon image, while the asus v9999 ge has a chip marked as “f75375s” to control the fan speed instead.” – by ky |
re: bad pixels, fans, other noise sources(6:09am est mon jan 10 2005) i've not found a single person complain of bad pixels. got none here. the screen makes no noise. the connections for the screen are a bit weird – you get a single cable which has dvi plus power input…you get an apple brick which takes standard 3pin power and converts to a small jackplug. all works fine on a pc without any cutting or other woes though. over the weekend i did consider changing my 3400 to a 4400 and grabbing another screen, but thats just pure greed :) – by lee |

nx6800gt-t2d256e + apple 30″(6:34pm est sat jan 22 2005) page 2-4 of the user manual states that the nx6800 series has “dual single-link dvi support able to drive the largest and highest resolution flat-panel displays”. comparing this to the nx6600 series (page 2-41) which simply says: “dual single-link dvi support”, there is some hope. if this card works it seems like it will work like the v9999, at a higher frequency rather than being dual dual-link. – by qubits |
nx6800gt-t2d256e + apple 30(5:17am est sun jan 23 2005) qubits: i think theres no hope since it states dual single link, once its single. its hopeless – by chobits |

asus v9999 ge boot screen(1:39pm est sun jan 23 2005) hi all, i can confirm the asus v9999 ge does work at 2560×1600, however i do not get a readable post screen upon boot. it flashes as if out of sync till it reaches full res. it will display lower resolutions after it fully boots into windows but not before. does anyone else with this card see the same behavior or should i rma it for an exchange? thanks, |

single-linke + apple cinema hd 30(3:08pm est tue jan 25 2005) i am using apple cinema hd 30” with windows xp pc + gefroce 6 6800 ultra (leadtek a400 ultra tdh) which has dual single-link dvi that can support up to quxga resolution (2048*1536).i am aware that for using acd 30-inch with optimum resolution (2560*1600) i need dual-link dvi but right now my acd 30” is working in 1280*800 resolution with single-link dvi. i made some custom resolutions and refresh rates that allow me to use it with lower resolutions but for higher, this display doesn’t work. i need some technical information about custom resolutions, refresh rates and advanced timing in apple cinema hd 30” that allow me to use it with higher resolutions since single-link dvi in many graphic cards support resolutions up to 2048*1536+32+75hz. previously i had a sony lcd 23” which by using a single-link dvi i was able to have resolution 1920*1200, but now with an acd30” i can not achieve even this resolution. – by aydin |

v9999ge works…but…(6:35pm est fri jan 28 2005) this post will be of interest to some i am sure……. ok so i have a 30″ running on a pci-express quadro 3400. no problems, i get bios post output, full res, no switching problems and can run games just ok. one of the girls in our office wanted a new pc so for curiosity i just built her an agp system and specced the v9999ge. yes, it works on the apple 30″ just like everyone says…however….there is a quality issue. in the bios and in windows (if you set the background wallpaper to solid black) you can see red flickering pixels on the screen. it only happens on black or really dark colours – on the normal blue windows desktop there is no noticeable flickering. i suspect that the v9999ge is being driven to the absolute limits and is blanking / running at 60hz to support the resolution. there is no such problem with the quadro. in all other respects the v9999 is fine. it shows the bios post and runs just fine under windows at 2560×1600 with normal colours. in terms of gaming – here are my 2 systems : dual 2.8 xeon em64t, 1gb ddr2 ecc reg, quadro 3400 : 9500 3dmarks single 3.0ghz p4 (ht), 512mb ddr-400, v9999ge : 9800 3dmarks absolutely nothing in it in real world performance. for laffs i'm going to buy another apple screen and see if the quadro 3400 can drive both – it shouldn't – its only the 4400 which has dual-dual-link output. worth a look though. – by lee |
fx 4400 + apple 30″(4:24am est sat jan 29 2005) it works, but fx 4400 is incredible expensive! – by rick64 |
leadtek nvidia quadro fx1300 + 30″(6:05am est sat jan 29 2005) hi i think the above may work as the fx1300 has exactly the same specs as the fx3400 except for 128mb memory.. – by cmanetc |
fx1300 does not work(5:05am est mon jan 31 2005) and the fact that it doesn't have dual-link dvi. from my post above “ati cards look good to me” the full list of pc cards that work with this screen (excluding 3d labs): i want single slot solution too, to fit in shuttle case, hence v7100 over fx4400. but does anyone know where i can _buy_ ati firegl v7100 cards? i've had two on back-order for ages but no-one in uk can supply them. – by stoomonster |
damn still no consumer 6800gt cards(7:51am est mon jan 31 2005) this is really sickening…been quite awhile and no manufacturer's churning out ddl cards for consumers like us…its silly to buy a high end card just to power the 30″ and yet play games at speeds slower than a 6800u – by 5566 |
ati radeon x850 xt(7:57am est mon jan 31 2005) i have been told that this card has dual-link dvi support, but ati aren't shouting about the feature. which is a big change from last time i looked still no availability in uk though. but if x850-xt can drive these lovely displays why would anyone want a v7100 anyway? |
ati x850xt pci-e(4:16am est tue feb 01 2005) so can anyone kindly do us a big favour and test it with the 30″ ? emailing ati isnt helping cos they arent really talking. we should be asking powercolour/sapphire and other card makers. – by johndoe |
ati x850xt pci-e(10:02am est tue feb 01 2005) i emailed ati regarding the 850 and this is the response i got. regaring x850xt and dual link dvi: no the x850xt does not have dual link dvi. no radeon card for pc has |

force geforce to support 30″ apple cinema hd display (pc)(2:07pm est tue feb 08 2005) it is possible to force geforce 6 to combine 2 single-links dvi channels for output 1 dual-link dvi because: 1- in nvidia geforce 6800 tech specs they write it has dual dvo port for interfacing to external tmds transmitters. – by aydinj |
still no hope?(2:17am est thu feb 10 2005) so in the end after much havin been said, still no card for pc (consumer level) is available to support the 30″ – by jamz |
still no hope ?(2:35am est thu feb 10 2005) jamz – i am running one 30″ display on a quadro 3400 pc and another on a v9999ge pc. so i'd say there are options for both consumer and professional alike ? its been a few weeks now and there is no noticeable difference between quadro and v9999 (in terms of general pc work, gaming) – i'm not a graphics rendering guy so have never seen any benefit from the quadro. had i have known about the v9999ge originally – i would have 2 pc's equipped with them ! – by lee |
i'm getting one…..(10:26am est thu feb 10 2005) i went ahead and ordered the ati fire gl x3 256m card. i'm hearing rumors you can install the consumor radeon card drivers(catalyst) and it'll act just like one with all the same direct3d gaming performance. i'm moving to a new apartment on friday, and if that goes smooth i'll pick up an apple 30″ on the weekend and let everybody know how that works out for gaming! – by james beatty |
by the way…..(10:29am est thu feb 10 2005) the ati fire gl x3 256m is a duel-link card. – by james beatty |
ati firegl x3 256 setup…..(11:04pm est thu feb 10 2005) i just got my firegl x3 256 in the mail. and i managed to install the catalyst drivers on the badboy so it'll literally be an ati x800 pro while playing games. it's common knowledge amoung techies that using the firegl drivers that come with the card that make it run as a firegl x3 256 will make games go slow and buggy, just so everyone knows. here's the secret: you can't install the catalyst drivers while the firegl card is in your computer. you can only install them with a radeon card in it, and maybe a rage card. thus you first install the catalyst drivers with a radeon card in your pc then you swap in the firegl card with the power to your pc off of coarse then when windows starts tossing up blood looking for a driver for the firegl you cancle windows update if it comes up and select ati x800 pro from the select it your own dam self list. and after a restart boom! you have it running as an ati radeon x800 pro for sweet gaming! one word of warning. your pc will panic looking for video drivers everytime you start windows. just ignore the messages and make them go away. if you find a way to stop it permanently then email me. futhermore, my old radeon 9800 pro 128mb got a score of 2480 in 3dmark 05 and my new driver hacked “radeon x800 pro” i mentioned above gets a 4664. so i know that the x800 driver hack worked as planned. ps: if i get to move into my new apartment as planned i'll buy the apple 30″ this weekend and let you all know how it goes. and how games work for me, and even give total annihilation a run. the cray epic maps guy: – by james@epicclass.com |
firegl and 30″ not a feasible combi(8:36am est fri feb 11 2005) hi i mean no harm but its still silly to buy a firegl and try to game and use the silly method and try to “hack” it. with that amt of money used to buy the firegl u could easily top up abit more and get two 6800gt running, nt to mention that, the firegl v7100 alone can pay for another apple 20″ screen.. – by jamz |
except…..(10:19am est fri feb 11 2005) yes, except the 6800gt's are not duel-link enabled and thus can't drive the screen even with 2 running in sli mode. they can't even run the screen at full resolution on a 2d windows desktop. the firegl x3 256 only cost me $800 and it is duel-link enabled which is required to run the apple 30″ at full resolution. the other thing to consider in my case is i have a tiny shuttle sff pc, the sn41g2, and i needed a single width card like the firegl x3 256. most of the more powerful geforce 6 cards are double width and won't fit in my case, or else draw way too much wattage for my little 250watt power supply. also the quadro 3000($1600) and 4000($2000) cost more then twice as much as the firegl x3 256. – by james beatty |
firegl 5000?(11:23am est fri feb 11 2005) how abt the firegl5000? can it drive the 30″ its cheaper than the v7100 which is really not worth it to purchase juz to drive the screen, buyin the v7100 is better off in buyin another apple 20″ which is cheaper – by jamz |
here's the link…..(2:41pm est sat feb 12 2005) #pcie says the firegl 5000 is duel-link. i don't understand why the next card up, the firegl 5100 isn't though. anybody know what's up with that? disclaimer: i don't guanrentee anything i'm saying will work. i'm flying by the seat of my pants myself. also, if i can get my furniture delivered in time i hope to pick up the apple 30″ monitor dam soon. maybe sunday? else after work one day this week. will suck sleeping in a sleeping bag until the dam bed shows up….. – by james beatty |
any kvm switches for this?(7:54pm est sat feb 12 2005) assuming you get a couple of firegl cards and want to switch this monitor between the two computers they're in, i wonder if there are any kvm switches capable of handling dual link dvi. the ones i've seen cap out at 1900×1200 or thereabouts so they must be sinlge link only. – by fu manchu |
ati firegl v7100 and apple 30″ cinema display(3:52am est mon feb 14 2005) ati firegl v7100 works perfectly with apple 30″ cinema display at native resolution 2560×1600@60hz. firegl drivers work a treat, and card is very fast (see table above it is a pcie x800xt) both for work and gaming. only gaming problem so far is that with firegl drivers anti-aliasing doesn't work in directx games. if this bothers you, it's actually quite easy to make catalysts run on this card. interestingly, i am guessing that the screens have had an update (my distributor told me that manufacturer's code had changed) because they can scale any signal — even the bios post ones. i have had none of the problems other people have mentioned with bios not appearing or being locked into native resolution only. one other thing to note is that only one of the two dvi connectors is dual-link but it's easy to swap if you plug it in the wrong one. this card works brilliantly with this screen! ps: ati firegl v7100 costs £545 (us$ 980) plus taxes from mediaatlantic.com – by stoomonster |
catalysts on firegl cards is easy(4:01am est mon feb 14 2005) and by easy we don't mean installing with one card in and swapping cards — that's insane… editing ini files from catalyst driver installer is the way, and very simple to do — and covered in depth at alternatively omega drivers work with firegl cards too. ps: seen that ati have updated their pages and now listed firegl 5000 as dual-link compatible, so i guess that it is too (but i don't know which chipset it uses). pps: also notice that ati now point out that dual-link only works from one connector. – by stoomonster |

apple 30″ performance(9:10pm est sun feb 20 2005) i go over to compusa to drool over this display from time to time and today's visit left me unsure i'm going to buy it. they have it running on a g5 with the nvidia 6800 ultra ddl and it was running movie trailers today. action scenes were terribly blurred and the slow scrolling screen credits didn't so much scroll as refresh in jerky line movements. for the first time i started believing the negative reviews it's had. maybe it's just the apple hardware the g5 ain't much. can anyone comment on the display's performance for games and videos on a fast pc? – by fu manchu |
fx-3400 and apple 30″(12:13am est tue feb 22 2005) ok, fx 3400 is not cheap but you dont`t have any trouble and i'had bought this card from ebay for $580. i think it's ok….. – by sam baker |
working good……(9:08pm est thu feb 24 2005) though i'm wondering if anybody has gotten world of warcraft working at full resolution. i changed it to 2560*1600 in a text file to get it to load, and that's the resolution the user interface in wow is at so i know it took, but the 3d game area is running at half that resolution and looks all blocky. help? – by james beatty |
fu manchu(1:43pm est fri feb 25 2005) i dont think its the display thats bad i think its just that the cards are just mediocre for thid display in like 6months when the next generation of video cards comeout they will be able to run movies and games perfectly….. and besides this is the future hp is comming out with their 30incher in a few months. and others will follow i think in 3 months all the issues with the videocards and the #0 incher will all be cleared up thats when i'll get mine :-) – by lb19984 |

ati firegl x3-256(5:50pm est tue mar 22 2005) hi, i have a question for someone with an ati firegl x3-256. does the card behave in the same way the 7100 does, that is does it display the bios and most windows resolutions at 60 hz? i know it has only 12 pixel pipelines so it's slower but i would have to buy a whole new system because of a 7100. your answer would help me a lot. thanks. – by ac30 |
ac20(8:28pm est tue mar 22 2005) my ati firegl x3-256 is displaying the bios upon bootup, allowing me to mess with it. i heard rumors on some random website maybe only the most recently manufactured apple 30″ screen could show the bios…..anybody know if that rumor is true? – by james beatty |
ati firegl x3-256 (2:07am est wed mar 23 2005) my ati firegl x3-256 shows the bios too, and the 30″ monitor was purchased in mid november – the earliest it showed up in the local apple store. rumor false. – by peter |
ati firegl x3-256 (7:46am est wed mar 23 2005) thanks guys, that's good news. one more question: will the card display all the important windows resoulutions at 60 hz? eg. when i launch doom3 or hl2 it first has to run at 800×600 and only then i can choose a higher res. so please confirm that this is possible, thanks a lot. – by ac30 |
ati firegl x3 256(9:56pm est wed mar 23 2005) i tried installing the proper drivers that came with the card instead of using catalyst drivers. i'm happy to report world of warcraft is now razor sharp and the framerate hovers around 30-40 frames per second (using the control+r command in-game). extremely playable! – by james beatty |

about the 512 meg cards..(3:58pm est wed jun 15 2005) dount u can run in sli since nvidia claims u cant.. but if you could they are extremly expensive :) – by aj |
about ati fire gl x3 256 card(5:43pm est wed jun 15 2005) just reconfirmed that you can indeed run the monitor with the agp firegl x3 card @60hz. the booting screens also nicely show up. i am using the included drivers with the card. all i have to do is to test the frame rate on some games. – by nader |

7800 gfx card(1:45pm est wed jun 22 2005) anyone have one (the new nvidia 7800 gfx) and able to try it out? specs for the evga one say the max res is something like 2000x1500ish, which is not enough for the 30 inch. alex – by alex |
asus's 7800gtx(5:58am est fri jun 24 2005) has anyone tried asus's 7800gtx on the 30″ display? heard that bfg's 7800gtx is working fine on it. anyone can confirm this? – by pika |
catalysts on v7100(9:11am est fri jun 24 2005) ac30, it's quite easy to get catalysts working on v7100 or any firegl card but it takes a few minutes of editing the installer cx_23864.ini and cx_23864.inf (e.g. cat 5.6) to do it. if you are not driver or programming literate it's a bit too complex to explain in little box here. i will write something up at rage3d.com that explains how to do it (when i have time). – by stoomonster |
geforce 7800 and ati r520(9:20am est fri jun 24 2005) do the reference specs for these cards include dual-link dvi? i don't think so, because it would help destroy the quadro market who's only physical difference with geforce cards is dual-link dvi. similarly ati's firegl cards are only physically different in dual-link dvi. both companies can maintain margins on expensive “workstation” cards this way. the old asus v9999ge only works though lucky timing, good news that xfx 6800 ultra has the similar, and same goes for any single-link dvi card and this screen. – by stoomonster |
not true that nvidia has best games support(9:30am est fri jun 24 2005) ati firegl v7100 is same chip as ati x800 xt which beats a nvidia 6800 ultra in review benchmarks. in addition, the v7100 can be seriously overclocked. i get 80+fps in half-life 2 / counter-strike source at 2560×1600 with everything on max (but no aa, don't need it at this res). i run doom3 at half res of 1280×800 with max aa and everything on full and get high fps. i can run battlefield 2 at 1024×768 with everything on max (inc aa) and get very fast fps unfortunately ea aren't too good about supporting this display's resolutions). a couple of games don't like running at 2560×1600 but this would be true of all cards. – by stoomonster |
so anyone know which 7800s work with the apple 30?(7:36pm est thu jul 07 2005) evga? pny? msi(apparently not), asus ? – by ganymede |
7800 should work(2:42am est sat jul 09 2005) ive heard taht its supposed to have dual link dvi port (what we need) but the card comes with two dvi ports standard, both of which appear to be single-link dvi ports. there were rumors going around that 7800 gtx cards would be equipped with dual-link dvi ports, which would allow for these cards to handle large scale (30″+) lcd screen resolutions, but that does not appear to be the case. both dvi ports can handle screen sizes up to 2048 x 1536, higher than most 24″ widescreen lcd's can handle at this” from well i got myself a dell 24 incher with 1920 x 1080 resolution…….. “good enough” has 1000:1 contrast and 1:500 britness looks kinda ugly but its good enough especially when playing 1080i or 1080p great monitor…. maybe the 7800gt who knows well the radeon x900xt has to have it release is supposed to be in a motnht or 2 – by lb19984 |
comfirmation?(11:37am est mon jul 18 2005) can anyone comfirm if the xfx 6800gt 256ram agp (vga/dvi or dvi/dvi) will work “correctly” on any of the apple 20/23 (exclude 30 for now)? i put quotes on “correctly” meaning, will this card drive the monitor at optimum resolution and show bios/post screen at bootup? – by totoro |
yay yaya yaya yaya yay aya(2:19am est tue jul 19 2005) ok the 7800 oficially works with the 30 incher @ 2560 x 1600 |
pny 7800gtx(9:32pm est tue jul 19 2005) on the pny website they list dual-link with the nice high resolution. i purchased this one and it works correctly on my 30″ in both xp and linux (the firegl v7100 didn't play nice with linux at the high res). also, if you have a gefen dl kvm, the 7800gtx works nicely when you set the driver to scale on the gpu and not on the monitor. – by john |

ati releases pc edition(9:48am est tue aug 30 2005) its an older chipset, but ati just released a 9600 for both apple and pc that run this card. you will see it under the apple 9600 area on their website. i would still go with the pny verto 6600 gt (agp) 128m model, its only $149 ish on newegg.com. it works great. none of the other 6600 cards i tried work. good solution if you just want to drive it until your next computer upgrade. if your looking for pcie cards, the nvidia 7800 supports it also. mihos – by mihos |
6600 gt work with 30″ display(9:31am est fri sep 02 2005) i bought an apple 30inch monitor. i tried buying a pny 6800 gt video card, it didn't work because it wasn't dual dvi. i then found another forum that mentioned it is possible to use a pny geforce 6600 gt (agp). i bought one for $230, and it works perfectly. i can even use an apple 30″ display and run my 17″ next to it. no problem. if you are looking for a cheap solution get the 6600. later, dan – by dan t |

pcie(1:40pm est thu nov 17 2005) hi, all. could someone give a roundup of the cheapest pcie cards capable of running the 30-inch display at full res, please? it looks like the cheapest i can find at the moment is the firegl v5000 for $300 twice the price of the verto that everyone's using on agp. the radeon x1600 pro should be able to handle it, for $199, but it should have been released months ago and there's no launch date in sight. have i missed anything? thanks.. – by cjbprime |

pny 6600 gt agp(5:14pm est fri dec 09 2005) after reading all the going ons here, i bought the apple 30″ hd display. my system is agp, so no pcie for me :-(. tried the ati x850, but did not work at full res. the pny 6600 gt works at 2560×1600 no problems! bought it through compusa online for $165. laters – by scotty |
