Unplug the connector wire. Take the tensioner spring loose forthe deck belts, then slip the belts off of the pulleys in the frontof the mower right below the engine. There is a single 5/8' boltthan comes out vertically on the bottom of the pto clutch. Takethat bolt out and make sure the 2 belts are slipped off of thepulleys and the pto clutch should drop right down. Make sure andremember how the spacers and the square slip pin goes in the pulleyassembly above the pto clutch. Install back in the reverse that youremoved it. P.S. It also helps give you more room to work if youlower the mower deck all the way 'down'.

If it only shuts off when the PTO is engaged it could be the field coil on the PTO is drawing too much current and activating the self resetting Circuit Breaker attached to the starter solenoid. This happened to me on our 316. If the PTO is shutting off it could be a bad connection on the field coil wire.

Why does PTO on john deere snowblower kill engine when engaged?

You have to engage the PTO clutch slowly because the snowblower has a lot of inertia to it, especially a two-stage blower. Get your RPMs up before you try to engage. Also, make sure that your snowblower will actually turn by hand before you hook it up. It might be jammed with ice or debris or it might need lubricated.

Several thoughts: Your power should decrease when you put the pto in gear. The brushhog takes power to turn. Perhaps the brush hog is binding or has problems? Maybe the problem is bad fuel or other problems with the tractor. Need more info to answer this question.

How do you troubleshoot a John Deere 185 hydro tractor that kills when pto is engauged?

First, check the operatorpresenceswitch located under the seat. Check and see if the wire are broken or that the switch is working. If this switch is broken the circuit to the deck will be tripped once the pto is trying to be engaged. If that doesn't work, next check and see if you have a battery that is strong enough to keep the electromagnet working.
